In an era of fragmented media consumption, one platform continues to quietly outperform expectations – audio.
Audio has become New Zealand’s leading weekly media behaviour, reaching more people, more often, and more consistently than almost any other channel. Today, 94% of New Zealanders aged 16+ consume audio every week, with 78% listening to radio. According to Where the Audiences Are 39% are reached daily via radio.
The scale alone is impressive. More compelling is the amount of time people spend listening. Kiwis devote an average of 4 hours and 25 minutes every day to audio, representing 27.6% of their waking lives.
A common perception is that radio is a promotional medium, rolling it out when a spike in sales is needed. But radio’s real strength is not just reach and frequency. It delivers on attention, emotion and memory.
According to System1 and Effie research, audio delivers more attentive seconds per impression than major visual channels while remaining one of the most cost efficient media available in this country. Audio produces an average 41% brand recall and delivers a 10% uplift in brand choice. Even when listener attention is low, audio achieves a 30% baseline level of brand recall, rising to 78% when attention is high.
This challenges the notion that advertising only works when consumers are actively watching. Audio works differently. It accompanies people through their day, during commutes, at work, while exercising, cooking and relaxing. Rather than interrupting consumers, it becomes part of their routine. Audio isn’t simply consumed; it is woven into daily rituals and emotional moments.
For advertisers, the implication is clear. Radio shouldn’t be viewed as a tactical reach extension or a budget efficient add on. It is a strategic brand building medium that combines scale, attention, emotion and effectiveness in a way few channels can match.
As media consumption continues to fragment, the platforms that succeed will be those that connect with people in meaningful moments. Audio has been doing exactly that for decades and will continue to do so – we’ve seen the explosion of podcasts, but the original influencer, the radio host, still attracts audiences consistently.
